Newsletter 05

New members – David Potter (1950 entry) has been enrolled as an honorary member, having attended our reunion lunch with David Shadick.

Still no response from Charlie Pattinson, Charlie Gould and Brian Johncock who have all joined FRU. I also wrote to Brian Richards in Luxembourg but
no response from him either. Perhaps an approach from a member who knew these chaps at school would lure them into joining us?
Fred Reader also signed up to FRU (pharmacist in W. Sussex, 3 children, 4 grandchildren) and I’ve sent him a message.
Current membership – there are now 25 active members with nine contacted or lapsed, around 35% of the 1951 entry in total. I feel we’re
getting close to bottoming out in numbers, bearing in mind a few deaths, emigrations, computer illiterates, and many who want to forget all about their
experiences at GGSFB. I’ve attached a complete listing of all contacts (not for the website) to this missive.
Website – the ‘then and now’ photo gallery has grown significantly, especially since 29th June, when Arley got busy with his camera. There’s
also a nice picture of the COFOC XV taken by Celia on the site. Every time I go into the site, the number of hits has grown considerably – we must be
getting visits from some non-members.
Mini-reunion – report from Ian Raymond
Consule Cunctis : think of others first? Well, that’s what Bill Bradshaw and Paul Mitchell did, arranging a mini reunion lunch in Gravesend on June
29. So fifteen ageing, balding teenagers (we wish) arrived at the Woodlands Hotel at around midday, four of us accompanied by our wives, and all
intrigued to see what the ravages of time had done to each other.
The first major problem was identification – although we all knew what Bill looked like, some of the others had changed somewhat – indeed one
innocent passer-by was most affronted to be accosted and challenged as a possible member of COFOC! The main exception was John Foster, who
seems to have expanded a little but is still immediately recognisable.
As the group grew, we renewed old acquaintances and caught up on some of our individual activities over the last ??? years – a process that continued
over the excellent leisurely lunch provided by the hotel. There was a great deal of catching up to do and much reminiscing about the various
characters – both teachers and pupils – whom we remembered for one special reason or another.
It was no surprise that lunch lasted from about 1 p.m. until after 3 p.m., since no-one was in a desperate hurry to leave, not even the wives. A great
deal of time was spent inspecting Arley’s gridded copes of the 1953 school photograph, trying to locate the various individuals present and fill some of
the gaps in our collective memory. Copies of the Miltonian from the relevant period were also passed around and produced several comments “I’d
forgotten him…” and so on.
A couple of photographs were taken at the table and then Bill ushered us outside for an “official” photograph, complete with suitably labelled rugby
ball. A commemorative photograph will be found on the website, courtesy of Arley.
There was more conversation and some exchanging of addresses before the party broke up, somewhat reluctantly, at about 5 p.m. All in all, the event
was a tremendous success and our thanks are due to Bill Bradshaw, firstly for getting us all together in the first place and then for persuading us to
attend. There are already plans afoot for a repeat event, perhaps next year and hopefully with even more taking part.
For the record, those present were: Bill Bradshaw, John Foster, Arley and Celia Bushill, Paul Mitchell, Dave Shadick, Keith and Brenda Done, Alec Crighton, Dave Potter, Ian and Elizabeth Raymond, Roger and Lorraine Shade, Eric Miller, John Neads, Graham Dyer, John Ramsey and John Dadson

Newsletter 04

New members – Eric Miller, Tony Webber, and Graham Dyer have been enrolled during May – welcome to them. Eric’s working at the British Museum as art conservator, Tony’s retired after a lifetime in marine insurance and living in Bexhill-on-Sea, and Graham’s retired and has his ruby wedding this year.

Charlie Pattinson joined the FRU website and has been in touch with Eric, but like Charlie Gould and Brian Johncock doesn’t seem to want to talk to me – why should they? Chacun a son gout, as someone reminded me Nitty would have said. Keith Done advised me of Brian Richards’ address in Luxembourg, and I’ve written to him.

Current membership – there are now 24 active members with four more potential contacted, out of the total 1951 entry of about 100.
Website – those of us with access will have seen the ‘then and now’ photo gallery has grown with Dave Thomas, John Foster, and John Neads added. Arley still wants the whole membership portrayed, so please send them in. Again, if the technophobic members without computer access send photo’s direct to me at 1, Pembroke Place, Leyland, Lancs PR25 2EH, I can scan and relay to the webmaster. Just a recent one will do – we’ll possibly be able to pick you out on the 1953 school panorama especially now that Arley’s busy putting a grid on the enlarged photo. Nice job, Arley. I will of course return any original photo’s sent in.

Mini-reunion – the lunch will be at the Woodlands Hotel, Wrotham Road, Gravesend on Saturday 29th June from 12 noon. Paul Mitchell has organised a table for us in a corner of the ‘Out & Out’ restaurant. There are now a dozen or more promising to attend, including two or three wives, and we anticipate a final tally of up to 20 if the ‘local’ lads turn up. It would be helpful if attendees bring cash to pay for their lunches to save the hotel management having to deal with umpteen credit cards.

See you there boys (and girls), can’t wait.

Newsletter 03

New members – as reported last time Donovan Kelly responded via his office email. I’ve sent him the spreadsheets but he hasn’t yet been back in touch. Brian Johncock has been in touch with Paul via the friends website, and John Ramsey has contacted Arley direct. They have presumably looked at our website, but are being a bit coy about direct involvement with the club. Charlie Gould has also signed onto the friends website, and I’ve tried twice to get him to talk to me without success.
Current membership – as our newsletter is published on the website, current members are listed here to encourage visitors from the 1951 GGSFB entry to join COFOC. Members are Brian Bradshaw, Frank Broad, Ken Burchfield, Arley Bushill, Mike Chadwick, Francis Copeman, Alec Crighton, John Dadson, Keith Done, John Foster, Horace Gillis, Don Kelly, Paul Mitchell, John Neads, John Ramsey, Ian Raymond, Terry Richens, Don Rutherford, Roger Shade, Dave Shadick, Dave Thomas, and yours truly.
Website – Arley still wants your ‘then and now’ photo’s for a ‘meet the members’ section – thanks to Paul for adding his mugshots to the rogue’s gallery. If the technophobic members without computer access send photos direct to me at 1, Pembroke Place, Leyland, Lancs PR25 2EH, I can relay to the webmaster. Just a recent one will do – we’ll possibly be able to pick you out on the 1953 school photo.
Mini-reunion – more responses have been received re venue for a mini-reunion lunch on Saturday 29th June, at a hostelry in the Gravesend area. The Woodlands Hotel in Wrotham Road is just ahead of the Darnley Arms in Cobham, in your voting for venue. Would all of you who are planning to attend please let me know – perhaps we’ll have to hire the Albert Hall instead! Be warned – I’m bringing my camera!
Autumn Reunion – just before my computer went phut, Brian Bradshaw advised that his planned UK trip was looking very unlikely this year. As we were planning our reunion around Brian’s visit, we’ll have to find another focal point. There is an outstanding invitation for us to visit the school, and I’d appreciate any suggestions that you may have.

Newsletter 02

New Member – Welcome to Donovan Patrick Kelly, who joined the friends website and has responded to my e-mail. Don’s a professor in the Dept of Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick. He responded from his office e-mail and promised to get in touch on his return form the Easter Vacs. I’ve sent him the spreadsheets for him to peruse on his return. I have his e-mail address if anyone wants to contact him direct.

Website – Arley wants your “then and now photos” for a meet the members section – perhaps a spot the geriatric competition! I’ve bitten the bullet and sent him mine to set an example of how such a good-looking 12 year old can turn into a cantankerous old git in 50 years. The school has mentioned our website in the Spring edition of the Old Gravesendian newsletter, and if anyone wants to go on the mailing list for this publication, contact Sharon Bolton on 01474 331893.

Mini-Reunion – Only two responses have been received re venue for a mini-reunion lunch on Saturday 29th June, at a hostelry in the Gravesend area. These are the Woodlands Hotel in Wrotham Road, or the Darnley Arms in Cobham, where they could possibly provide a separate room off the main bar. Would those planning to attend, please let me know and let me have your preference as to venue.

Sportsman’s Reunion Ball – On May 18th there will be a celebration of over a century of sport at GGSFB. This is open to all old boys and their partners plus teachers past and present. It’s a black tie affair and tickets are £25 a head. There’ll be a jazz band, casino, buffet, buicking bronco, two professional acts, a magician, and a disco.

Newsletter 01

New Members – Welcome to John Foster, John Neads, John Dadson, and Keith Done; all of whom have responded by post. Unfortunately not on e-mail but I will keep them updated by ‘snailmail’.

Website – Arley is busy building the website (address in letterhead above). Members’ phone numbers, e-mail and postal addresses will not be published on the net, and all contact will be channelled via myself to protect members’ privacy. The 1953 school photo is on the site, but I’ll be happy to print it out (in 5x A4 size sections) and send by post to anyone who wants a copy. We would also like to receive “then and now photos” from members for a “meet the members” section – perhaps a ‘spot the geriatric’ competition! The school has agreed to mention our website in the next edition of the Old Gravesendian Newsletter.

Mini-Reunion – The Head Teacher at Rosherville Primary School has been persuaded to hold a reunion for past pupils and teachers on the 28th June. As I will be in the Gravesend area for that event, it has been suggested that those members who live in the area (and any others who want to travel) could meet up for a mini-reunion lunch on Saturday 29th June, at a local hostelry. Suggestions for a venue are welcome and details will be posted in due course.

Ex-Members – Messages from Roger Smith, who was the first of our classmates to register on Friends Reunited website, suddenly stopped last autumn and my efforts in tracing him have failed. Likewise, Fred Theobald who was in Oman supporting the RAF has disappeared from view. He did mention he was going to retire to Thailand with his Thai wife (his third) and I suppose he’s done it. Robin Acton and Barrie Wallwork do not appear to want to be involved – perhaps its me. Barrie registered at the Northfleet school and was only present at GGFSB in the fifth year to do his O levels.

Personal – Its Janet’s and my 40th wedding anniversary on the 17th March (no she’s not Irish) and we’re off tomorrow to visit our old honeymoon haunts around Lynmouth for a few days, so I’ll be off the air for a week or so – hoo-bloody-ray I hear you shout.
